Who do you think is cool?

On her blog, Mayu wrote about a TV drama that is popular in Japan now. You can see the opening of the show on YouTube.

She wrote: "The boys thought the first guy that apears is cool, but the girls thought the second guy wearing a white suit is cool. What do you think?"

I am curious about what Colorado students think. Who is the coolest guy?

If we're going to talk about social masculinity and the perception of "coolness" and what that could possibly mean then we have to ask ourselves, would this opening even exist in a TV series airing in the US?

I don't think so, personally.

I imagine that this is a "guy-getter" show based around the love interest the primary female lead would have with the four male characters appearing in the opening.

I think one of the problems with identifying any of these characters as "cool" is that none of these male leads are designed to appeal to a heterosexual male.

They're highly feminine with at best nearly indistinguishable archetypal personalities.

While I realize that these characters are perfectly molded to appeal to young girls and are a specifically designed to appear as an ideal, safe, perhaps even wholesome love interest, their character is as unreal and insubstantial as the opening scenery.

Therefore it's difficult for me to say one kid is "cooler" than the other.

Additionally, the completely child-like finale where the four boys hold hands and spin in a circle is very far from what I would have considered "cool" in High School.

So, in short: None of them look "cool."

However, I'm basing all of my pretty large judgements on a very small opening sequence that leaves little to go on. I'm sure some kind of substantial character would be revealed for these four guys in the actual series. From this opening alone, however, it's impossible to tell.

Even their clothes are too similar.

花より男子大好き! 全部見ました!(笑)

I think the character "Hanazawa Rui" is the coolest (the man in the white suit). America and Japan have very different images of what a "cool" guy is, I guess, but even so, I prefer Japanese "coolness" -- even though it's sometimes considered "feminine" by American standards.

I think American men think men who are well-dressed and have a clean appearance are not "masculine" and are even in some cases seen as metrosexual or even homosexual. This way of thinking really, really confuses me! I don't understand the American "cool" image at all... OTL

There is little difference presented between the four boys aside from hair color and clothing color. Even their clothing styles are fairly similar and mostly present a strong middle-upper to upper class sensibility. The supposition that one is from New York, one from somewhere else, one is an artist presented by a mere half second mantage doesn't really SAY anything concrete about the kids.

Even in High School, the "cool" people were judgements I made about how people acted, what they said and did, as opposed to how they dressed or what kind of hair they had with the exception that certain people seemed extremely capable of pulling off wild and outrageous styles that went above and beyond what you might see in a fashion magazine--which all these boys seemed to have been pulled from.

Well, when I first watched the anime, and then the drama, I liked Hanazawa Rui the best. But over time, Domiyoji's character grew on me.
I don't think I'd want to date either one, Domiyoji has some serious anger issues, and Rui is kinda autistic and socially inept, at best he could be classified as emo.
My favorite character in this drama is a toss-up between the shop owner tsukushi works at and her tsukushi's little brother.

I'm going to avoid a deep philosophical discussion on a japanese drama and say: the first guy in the black is way cool. Look at him, he's got the dark and mysterious look going on. Badass.

i suppose the guy in white could be the "coolest" that is if we were just going by hair style. he has some fancy hair going on there.

I have only seen the introduction on youtube. But just based on how they look, I'd have to say it is guy #4. Definitely.

Might I add the comment that I love this series. Well not as much as the Taiwanese version, but the Japanese drama and the anime.

ANYWHO!!! ^^ I believe that the definition of "cool" varies between from everyone. Each one of those characters are "cool" in their own way. Not just one person is cool. That's what I think. o.o
